Heartworm Prevention
If left untreated, heartworms can prove fatal for pets. Therefore, we strongly recommend that your dog have an annual heartworm check, combined with regular preventive treatments. Below you'll find additional information on the various heartworm preventive medications that we carry:
|
Heartgard® - Helps prevent heartworms, and treats roundworms and hookworms, too; for dogs and cats. Convenient, easy-to-give chewable that most dogs will eat right out of your hand. |
|
Revolution® - topical medication prevents heartworms, external parasites (i.e. fleas and ticks), and internal parasites. |
|
Tri-Heart® Plus - protection against heartworms, roundworms, or hookworms. |
Flea and Tick Prevention
Flea and tick prevention is a vital part of pet ownership. These pests may seem more like an annoyance than a threat, but their bites can lead to a wide range of diseases or other parasites. For the protection of you, your family, and your pet we recommend and provide these effective flea and tick medications:
|
NexGard™ - Mount Tabor Animal Hospital is a proud provider of the next generation of flea and tick protection. NexGard is sold exclusively to veterinarians, and is available only with a veterinarian's prescription.
Combining a revolutionary new active ingredient with an innovative new form, NexGard is FDA-approved, prescription-only protection that:

Kill New Fleas All Month Long
NexGard is easy to give and has the speed it takes to kill fleas before they can lay eggs. In addition to being strong and convenient, it's consistent too. NexGard's killing power stays strong all month long so that you don't have to worry about infestations coming back.
NexGard™ vs. The American Dog Tick
Ticks now pose a greater threat to dogs across the country than ever before. One of the ticks that warrants serious concern is the American Dog Tick, a resilient parasite widely distributed across the US. Despite its name, a host of domestic animals and urban wildlife can harbor the American Dog Tick, such as coyotes, raccoons, feral cats, and stray dogs. These ticks are one of the primary causes of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the US, and are also associated with other diseases, like Ehrlichiosis, Tick Paralysis, and Tularemia. In a 30-day clinical study, NexGard was greater than 97% effective in killing live ticks through Day 30.
Protection in a Form Dogs Favor
NexGard soft chews are designed for ease of administration. Created with soy proteins and braised beef flavoring, NexGard features a chewy texture, rich brown color, and beefy aroma that makes it easy to give. And, because it is a vegetable-based, meat-less chew that uses beef flavoring, NexGard won't trigger beef allergies. Another bonus: there is no need to administer NexGard with food, and you will not have to hide NexGard in your dog's food to get him or her to take it.
NexGard is the first and only soft, beef-flavored chew that kills BOTH fleas and American dog ticks. Contact Mount Tabor Animal Hospital to discuss whether NexGard is the right choice for your dog: 336-765-3974

Understanding Heartworm Disease
Carried by mosquitos, dogs are the definitive host, but is seen in cats too. There is effective treatment for dogs, and no approved cure for cats. Dogs go into heart failure; cats have upper respiratory symptoms, asthma-like symptoms, or death.
We recommend starting puppies and kittens at the time of their first exam.
